I was listening to a podcast and learned something which was fascinating.....

It's no question that photography is a huge part of my life. It's what I do for a profession, it's what I do in my spare time, it's what I read about and it's often what I listen to - in the form of podcasts and audiobooks. Recently, I was listening to an episode of one of my favorite podcasts, the Beginner Photography Podcast and the host was talking about how important it is for children to have their picture taken. Several studies have been conducted which have all generated the same results - when children see themselves in photos their self-esteem is improved. They feel like they are a part of their family. They feel like they matter. When a child sees their photo hanging on the wall in their family's home they know they have a place in the world. They feel as though their family members are proud of them. When you decide to have your family's photos taken, it goes beyond just a chunk of time spent in front of a camera. It sends a strong message to everyone involved - we are here, we are together and our memories together, matter. So if you have been on the fence about whether or not professional photography is worth the investment, think about its long-term impact. Another photographer's blog (Debbie Camba from New Jersey) cited a professor who said: "For children, in particular, looking at photographs is part of the socializing process; learning who you are and where you fit into the family. By displaying photographs of our children at different stages of their lives, we are making a very public statement that we are proud of them,” says Professor Geoff Beattie, Head of School and Dean of Psychological Sciences at the University of Manchester. I couldn't have said it better myself!
